East By Ganges: Kolkata & The Southern Parts Of Bengal
If you think about a city that is not a city but a kaleidoscope of vibrant living, then you are actually thinking about Kolkata. Once happened to be the second most important city of the British Empire after London, this city still oozes the Raj day charms, but never loses her cerebral identity. Debates, books, art galleries, historic monuments, museums, fancy shopping malls, local bazaars, multi-cuisine restaurants, street foods, political processions, and the daily mayhem of life make Kolkata like every other major metropolis in the world. And like every other metropolis in the world, it has its own individuality. It is distinctly unique, yet universal! And this city is a convenient gateway to more places mingled with heritage – terra cotta temple art at Bishnupur, Nawabi reminiscences at Murshidabad or Sultaniyat carcasses at Maldah – each is as good as others for a discerning traveler.
Just some 100 km away from this busy, urban metropolis there remains a world of myth and magic – the pristine mangrove forests of Sunderbans. A world heritage site, Sunderban is the largest mangrove forest of the world, claims to fame for the magnificent Royal Bengal Tigers, although the ethereal beauty of Sunderban is not merely confined with the beasts. Approachable only by the rivers, and intersected by thousands of narrow creeks, this waterscape is omnipotent to create magic realism of a lost world!

East By Himalayas: Sikkim, Darjeeling Hills, And The Wilderness of Dooars
If you see somewhere two rivers meet to love each other, and if their affection melts into a mutually incredible stream, and if the stream reflects the color of emerald – do stop your car. You are on the border of Darjeeling Hills & Sikkim. The up hills guarded by mighty Himalayan peaks and washed by en number of rivulets do have two sides of the story. One part is clearly tangible and stunning; another part is highly mysterious and otherworldly. The mist, mystery and monastery – together command the contour line of Eastern Himalayas. Sip the charm over a cup of orthodox Darjeeling.
And while coming back to the plain land of heat and humidity, the foothill ofHimalayas, the Dooars, gives you an opportunity to acclimatize your soul (and body too). Spotted with dense forests and dotted with hundreds of tea gardens, it would be a soothing break, and adventurous too! If you already spotted something cute and red in the uphills, go here for a robust and gray one, and tag your tour as a ‘Rhino to Red Panda trail’.

East By North East: The Seven Sisters States
If magic still belongs to the earth, that is in the north east of India, indeed! A land you cannot fathom on your android phone because that is too small to capture the splendor. A life you cannot pace with your wristwatch because time actually stops here. India’s North East – the name is synonymous with the contiguous seven sister states of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland & Tripura. These states cover an area of 255,511 square kilometers (98,653 sq mi) or about seven percent of India’s total geographical area. The region shares more than 4,500 kilometers (2,800 mi) of International border with China (Southern Tibet) in the north, Myanmar in the east, Bangladesh in the south-west & Bhutan to the north-west. The northeastern part of India is interspersed with valleys & hilly terrain & offering such imposing & stunning views that are breathtaking & beyond words.
Start from Assam, the domain of tea and tuskers, get lost in the caves and on the living roots bridge in Meghalaya, tap with the tribal dance steps at Nagaland, flow as the river streams meander in Arunachal Pradesh – but stop nowhere before exploring the Jewel of India – Manipur. This is indeed a never-ending story where time stands still once you set foot over the virgin forests of Mizoram. The spellbinding archaeology of Tripura coupled with the unrealistic beauty makes you stare in admiration.
